Not too long ago we met a German traveler who we had the privilege of traveling with through the northern loop of Vietnam. We spent several days together, traversing the most incomprehensible terrain via motorbike, through the sunshine, sand storms, and downpours. During the first leg of our journey we decided to pass through Hau Thao village, a village we had been to before, to visit our newly made family there and to show our new friends the immense beauty of Sapa without the hoards of tourists, hawkers shoving their crafts in your face or over priced food.
While at our Hau Thao homestay, Fabian (our German friend), decided to set up his hammock on the front porch. The weather was perfect for a bit of a chill in the ‘mock, with a good book and some hot milo. Another moment when I secretly envied someone for bringing a hammock along on their travels. In my mind I was already planning on ordering one once I got to a spot where I knew I would be staying for an extended period, to ensure delivery of my items. “If everyone on the planet owned a hammock, don’t you think the world would be a better place?” asked Fabi one day. I looked over to the kids swinging and realized they had been the sole enjoyers of the bed sack up until now, and I thought to myself, “He has a point.”
Let’s be frank; everyone loves the swaying feeling of that thin piece of canvas or rope, tied between two trees. It is the epitome of relaxation. The quintessence of vacation and you know that you need one. You do. Whether you’re an outdoorsy person or not. It’s ideal for reading, sleeping, napping, entertaining the kids, putting your little one to sleep, watching your favorite series (i.e. GOT), listening to some good tunes, or simply enjoying the view. Heck, you need more than one, because I promise you – the moment you set that little piece of heaven up, everyone is going to want an hour with her.
Just before we left our mama Sumi and her family in the village, our buddy gifted his hammock to the kids. “It’s the best feeling, giving – to make others happy. I want to make the world a hammock place.” I love this saying, because ‘doing good’ speaks volumes to me. Luckily for us, he’s not the only one who believes in this mission, the peeps at Madera Hammock Co have had this very same epiphany.
Madera Outdoor don’t only sell top quality hammocks, providing people with countless unforgettable moments, more friends, less stress and better sleep, but they also give back to the community and the environment. They are committed to the rehabilitation of people, nature, and spirit, through a partnership with Trees for the Future. For every hammock sold they plant 2 trees – hammocks need trees, and Madera, after all, does mean wood. To date they have planted over 10 255 trees, with their projects based in Sub-Saharan Africa, they are improving the lives of poverty-stricken farmers. You can read more about their plans here.
